Navigating Treatment Options for Autism Spectrum Disorder

This workshop is designed to help professionals learn about various treatment options available for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Participants will receive information on the most current evidence based treatment options, biomedical treatment options and related approaches. Participants will receive a resource guide of local ASD resources and service providers.

Speaker:  Ashley H. Perry, Ph.D.

Ashley H. Perry, PhD, is an assistant professor of Special Education at the University of West Alabama. Ashley received her doctorate in Special Education with research emphasis on Autism Spectrum Disorder and Family Studies from The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. She is a former special education teacher in the Shelby County School System, In addition she has taught in the university setting at The University of Alabama and The University of Alabama-Birmingham.

 

Dr. Perry has enjoyed serving as a volunteer, advocate, trainer and educator across the state of Alabama for individuals with special needs, family members and professionals who serve individuals with special needs. She has served as a dedicated volunteer with the Autism Society of Alabama for many years. She has over 15 years of classroom teaching experience in Alabama working with young children in the early childhood and elementary setting who have more severe developmental, cognitive and behavioral needs. She has extensive experience working with children with moderate to severe Autism Spectrum Disorder and developmental delay.  She currently serves on the Board of Directors for Arts ‘n Autism, United Cerebral Palsy of West Alabama and Child Abuse Prevention Services in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

 

Workshop Overview:

This workshop is designed to help professionals learn about various treatment options available for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).  Participants will receive information on the most current evidence based treatment options, biomedical treatment options and related approaches.  Participants will receive a resource guide of local ASD resources and service providers.

 

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify available treatments, interventions, therapies and other services for Autism Spectrum Disorder.

2. Explain differences between evidence based treatment options, biomedical treatment options and related approaches.

3. Observe demonstrations of different intervention techniques and strategies.

4. Assess a child’s potential and specific needs with treatments or strategies that are likely to help him/her reach established goals and greatest potential.

5. Utilize the information on treatments for ASD to help families educate themselves about all options and choose what they feel is in the best interest of their child and family, based on their experience and resources available.
