KAP in the Outpatient Mental Health Clinic

Presenters: Emily Young Bullock, Psy.D. & Scott G. Allen, M.D.

    6 Continuing Education Credits

This workshop is being held in partnership with the Utah Psychological Association.

    *EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT THROUGH 3/31/24*

    Workshop Description

Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is the utilization of the ketamine medication within a therapy session, along with integration therapy sessions after each medicine session.

An increasing number of clinics are offering ketamine medication treatment as a stand-alone treatment, without any psychotherapy or integration services. Great Salt Lake Wellness and Satori Health are on a mission to train mental health conditions in the ethical use and administration of ketamine treatment via the Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy protocol. Pairing the ketamine medication with talk therapy and integration services facilitates a more robust outcome. Ketamine is the “tool” used in KAP, but the psychotherapy and processing of unresolved trauma and underlying issues is what typically helps treat the mood disorder.

    Learning Objectives

    • Describe the field of psychedelic medicines and ketamine.
    • Explain proper intake and evaluation processes to assess patients’ suitability for KAP
    • Demonstrate skills specific to KAP
    • Discuss assessing and managing suicidal ideation and appropriateness for KAP
    • Identify multi-cultural applications and Ethics in psychedelic assisted psychotherapy
    • Explain methods for assisting your existing therapy clients when they are receiving ketamine medication treatment at another clinic
    • Identify practice management issues (e.g., legal, insurance, safety)

    Workshop Description

For close to 30 years, Th e Trust has been providing continuing education workshops and individual consultations with a focus on improving psychologists’ risk management skills and strategies. Th ese workshops have evolved from basic concepts and strategies, to a more applied, integrated, and strategic approach to help you protect yourself from adverse disciplinary and legal actions and to support competent practice. For this newest workshop, The Trust Risk Management Consultants have continued to review data from nearly 90,000 consultations provided to date, along with relevant research, to determine the problems practitioners often confront, and potential strategies for addressing them. The topics in this new workshop will include an updated review of decision science and its implications for bias and vulnerability in clinical, ethical and risk management decision making, strategies for reducing the impact of these vulnerabilities, issues arising in remote services (during and beyond the pandemic), addressing boundaries in advocacy by professionals on behalf of their clients/patients, and the risk management implications of self-care (or its absence) for psychologists.

    * This course will not fulfill requirements of all jurisdictions. It is important that potential participants review their respective state licensing board requirements prior to registering for this workshop.
