Workshop Overview:

Dr. McDermott, Mr. Borgona and Ms. Berry will discuss the history, rational and application of the 2018 Practice Guidelines for Men and Boys recently released by the American Psychological Association.  The presenters will also discuss the controversy created by these guidelines and how they fit into the current national discussion of what it means to be a man.  Psychologists’ role in shaping that discussion will also be explicated.

 

About the Speaker:

Dr. McDermott is a licensed psychologist and assistant professor at the University of South Alabama’s combined-integrated Clinical and Counseling Psychology (CCP) doctoral program.  Dr. McDermott is a nationally recognized expert in the psychology of men masculinity and maintains an active research program.  Mr. Borgogna and Ms. Berry work under Dr. McDermott and have published several studies on topics related to mean’s health and well-being.  Dr. McDermott was one of four core psychologists tasked with organizing and developing the Guidelines for Men and Boys.  He and his students helped steward the guidelines through the many hurdles required by the American Psychological Association for the adoption of practice guidelines.

 

  

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

· Discuss the biological & social contributors to the wellbeing of men and boys.

· Describe the dominant theoretical paradigms in the psychology of men and masculinities.

· Discuss the need for guidelines for psychological work with men and boys.

· Identify ways in which they can apply the guidelines in their practice with men and boys.

· Have an understanding the current national conservations occurring on what it means to be a man in America and how psychologists can help shape that conversation.
