Workshop Overview:

Our Motivational Interviewing (MI) workshop will provide 6 CE Credit Hours credit led by Dr. Heather Austin, a Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) Member. Goals of the workshop will include introducing participants to basic skills of MI as well as  new concepts for the evidence-based practice. Interactive practice of skills based will be highlighted with a primary focus on practice of MI within this workshop. The trainer will guide participants in learning the technique, style and spirit of Motivational Interviewing and will provide several opportunities during the training to practice their motivational interviewing skills with the support and feedback of the trainer. This training is appropriate for professionals/professionals-in-training who have had no prior or some exposure to Motivational Interviewing techniques. People whose work involves helping clients achieve behavior change, ( i.e. mental health clinicians, counselors, coaches, psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, physicians, nurses, case workers, outreach workers, dietitians, therapists, clergy, personal trainers, etc.) will benefit most from this intensive Motivational Interviewing training.



Speaker:  Heather Austin, Ph.D.

Dr. Heather Austin is a pediatric psychologist who works in private practice at Ackerson and Associates and is also employed as an  Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Pediatrics, Division of Adolescent Medicine.    At UAB Heather works with a nationally funded program through   Maternal and Child Health called Leadership Education in Adolescent Health (LEAH). Within the UAB LEAH program she focuses on interdisciplinary training and supervision with a focus on adolescent-centered/family-involved, culturally competent and community-based care. Her interest and love for Motivational Interviewing began in graduate school and has continued since then. Her education in MI has included advanced training in MITI coding with Dr. Jennifer K Manuel, and she has participated in a variety of programs targeting health behavior change using MI (e.g. weight management, smoking cessation, reducing risk taking behaviors). Most recently, her interest in MI has led to her developing an advanced training in MI for health care professionals in the medical setting at UAB. Dr. Austin became a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers in October 2017, and currently provides introductory training, immediate training, advanced training, supervision and coaching.


Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

· List core communication skills (OARS) to elicit and reinforce Change Talk

· Identify Change Talk and Sustain Talk and find ways to elicit and reinforce Change Talk and reduce Sustain Talk

· Name ways to recognize client signs for readiness to change and develop effective change plans.

· Describe  how motivational interviewing is linked to efforts to promote change in a variety of mental health settings.
